Now is the time to consult your calendar and figure out your must see/do events. There are an abundance of options, and unless you have the ability to clone yourself, you can’t attend them all. The Women’s Council of Realtors South Bay Network presents the annual Taste of Summer tonight, Thursday, June 22 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at South Coast Botanic Garden. The Taste of Summer is not to be missed! Named the ‘funnest’ event to EVER be held on a Thursday, with the best craft beers, wine and food! Eat, drink and get lei’d… but really, there will be leis! Yes, you should wear your Hawaiian shirt and pop on a hat if you have one! Sip down some red wine, bid on silent auction items and enjoy the sights of nature in the Botanic Garden. The City of Hermosa Beach and the Hermosa Arts Foundation present the annual South Bay Film & Music Festival from June 22 through June 25. Selections will include offerings from the Documentary, Narrative, Surf Film Showcase and Shorts Programs sections, as well as art exhibitions and special presentations. Many of the filmmakers, actors and participating artists will be on hand for Q&A sessions following the film screenings. Start your summer on the right foot at the annual Manhattan Beach 5K on Saturday, June 24. Bring the whole family and run/walk during the lowest tide of the season. The MB 5K starts and finishes under the Manhattan Beach Pier. Participants will race out and back north to the jetty at 45 Street. The super low tide creates a perfect running surface of hard packed sand like a dirt road so running with or without shoes is an option (the faster athletes tend to wear shoes). One can even wear track spikes! Baby joggers work great and are encouraged. Packet Pick Up and Late Registration is Friday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Village Runner located at 1840 Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach and from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the Manhattan Pier on race day. Fees are $35 for the 5K and $25 for the kids races. Kids can do the 5K or compete in their own race after the main event in the Little Kid’s Dash. Adults have a chance to watch the kids race up and down at age appropriate distances. Cool awards and a chance to stand on the podium to the top five in the following divisions: 2 and under, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12. Cool beachy T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered runners and to late registrants while supplies last. The World Famous Cookie Medals will go to the top 5 with a chance to stand on the podium in all 28 age divisions. The kid’s races have the same cool awards as the adults! The Environmental Priorities Network presents the annual Solar & Green Homes Tour in Torrance and the Beach Cities on Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Using the sun to produce electricity from a rooftop solar photovoltaic system is a powerful action one can take to reduce the dangers of the climate crisis and save money as well. These homes on the tour have many other environmental features like solar hot water heating, low voltage lighting, drought-tolerant landscaping, rainwater capture and plug-in electric vehicles. The flyer lists the names and addresses of each homeowner, as well as the time when each home is open to visitors. There is no charge for visiting these homes, but contributions are welcome. The annual Riviera Village Summer Festival will take place on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25. This popular event takes place from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. both days and admission is FREE. There will be over 250 vendor booths featuring arts and crafts, apparel, accessories, commercial, civic and non-profit organization exhibits and much, much more. Local acts and musicians will be performing live on the Community Stage both days so be ready to rock. The little ones will delight in the carnival rides and games and adults will appreciate the Beer & Wine Garden, where they can sit back and take in the ocean view, sea breezes and great music while enjoying a refreshing adult beverage. You don’t want to hassle with parking so leave the car at home and take out the bicycles or use the free shuttle service to and from the event from the South High parking lot. The Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation is proud to present the first South Bay Festival of the Arts on Saturday, June 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. The event will feature live performances, art displays, demos, craft beer tastings, food and children’s arts and crafts. All four of the Center’s stages – the Armstrong Theatre, the Ken Miller Stage, the Torino Plaza Main Stage, and the Nakano Theatre – will feature live entertainment throughout the Festival. The Torino Plaza Main Stage will feature bands and musical artists from all around the country. Streetlight Cadence is ready to rock the Torino stage, playing everything from alternative folk pop and rockabilly to soul music and bluesy vocals. The Armstrong Theatre will feature local performers and musicians, including Liz King (2nd place winner from 2016’s South Bay’s Got Talent competition) and UnitOne Asano Taiko Japanese drums. The Nakano Theatre will feature local musical ensembles, like the Palos Verdes Symphonic Band and the Music Teacher’s Association. The Ken Miller Stage will be geared towards family-friendly entertainment with storytelling, karaoke, and just plain silliness! Some of the best local restaurants, caterers, breweries, and wineries will have food and beverages available for purchase during the festival. The beautiful Japanese garden will be the site of the beer and wine garden. Local artists and craftsmen will have handmade merchandise available for purchase. There will also be drawings for prizes and pop-the-balloon prizes offered to festival-goers. Within the classrooms of the Center, instructors will be teaching crafts and giving demonstrations to visitors of all ages. The City of Lomita presents the annual Founder’s Day Celebration on Saturday, June 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Lomita Park. The public is invited to this FREE event which will include music, carnival games, food trucks, performances by local groups and more. Destination: Art presents the annual Downtown Torrance Art Walk on Saturday, June 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. Outstanding local artists from all over the South Bay will be showcased at the ten participating venues. The community is encouraged to come by and enjoy the art and other downtown restaurants and shops. The Associates, a group of over 60 South Bay artists affiliated with Destination: Art, are exhibiting from June 1 to June 30 in the Destination: Art Gallery. The Awards Reception is the first stop on the Downtown Torrance Artwalk. Visitors are invited to celebrate with the awards recipients as cash prizes will be awarded by this year’s Awards Judge, and nationally known Torrance-based fine artist, Joe Mancuso. The map shows the current art walk venues, however the list may change as other businesses are added to the tour.-The Destination: Art Gallery artists will be displaying art for purchase on the patio of Chef Shafer’s The Depot located at 1250 Cabrillo Avenue.-The Torrance Artists’ Guild will be showing artwork in front of the Red Car Brewery located at 1266 Sartori Avenue.-Paintings of historic Torrance sites by Destination: Art artists will be on display at the Torrance Historical Museum along with paintings from their permanent collection. The City of Torrance Community Services Department and local Homeowners Associations are proud to sponsor Movies in the Park. These movie nights will take place at various parks throughout the city this summer. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Pack up a picnic basket, blanket and lawn chairs and join friends and neighbors for an evening of family-friendly cinematic entertainment as the parks convert into outdoor movies theaters. Each event will feature a different movie beginning at dusk (around 8 p.m.) so bring a jacket, popcorn, cocoa and snacks and join in the fun! The City of Rancho Palos Verdes Recreation and Parks Department presents a Drive-In Movie in the Park on Saturday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Point Vicente Park/Civic Center. The public is invited for a FREE evening of cinema under the stars with a screening of Kubo and the Two Strings. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early. The Redondo Beach Library will host a Local Author Event with Gwendolyn Womack on Tuesday, June 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Gwendolyn Womack will discuss her latest novel The Fortune Teller. It is about the discovery of a manuscript written in the time of Cleopatra that tells the story of a priceless tarot deck which is both memoir and prophecy. The South Bay’s Got Talent competition is returning to the James R. Armstrong Theatre on Saturday, September 23 at 7 p.m. Do you possess star quality? I was excited to learn Nothing Bundt Cakes would be opening a location in Torrance. I’ve been going to the Manhattan Beach shop for years and now there’s one just down the road from my house. This is a good news/bad news situation…. on the one hand, I no longer have to drive to MB for a bundt fix…. on the other, the temptation to visit frequently is something I’ll have to control.
