South Bay Weekend Guide March 16, 2017
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

The fog we’ve been enveloped in the past week has been pretty epic. I was driving along the Esplanade last weekend and it was so thick I couldn’t see the water. One afternoon, we had the deck doors open and there was fog rolling through the living room. Some local photographers have posted remarkable images of it creeping ashore and shrouding the hill. Ethereal it may be, but I hope it clears up for the weekend because there’s lots going on and it’s always helpful to actually see what you’re doing.

The Western Museum of Flight presents the Celebrity Lecture Series with Iris Critchell, WWII WASP, on Saturday, March 18 at 11 a.m. Iris Critchell was a Women’s Air Force Service Pilot and Pioneer Aviatrix. Human history is largely a history of pioneers, doing what no one had done before, but most pioneers did not set out to be pioneers; they just saw something that needed doing or a chance to do something new and significant. One such pioneer was Iris Critchell. Her multitude of achievements may all be considered as pioneering effort. She, however, was just doing what came naturally, applying her many talents to a variety of activities that intrigued her and a wide range of jobs that needed doing. One of the most vitally needed of these was her work as a Women’s Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) during World War II. These pioneering women, despite being excluded from combat duty, braved many hazards and dangers inherent in the job of climbing into brand new, untested, mass produced aircraft, and delivering them to wherever they were needed by the fighting forces regardless of weather, fatigue, or risky conditions at launch of landing sites. Their efforts were absolutely vital to America’s triumph in WWII. Her service as a WASP is just one of the many pioneering activities that have defined Iris Critchell’s spectacular career. Attendees will hear this remarkable woman share some of her fascinating experiences from WWII and beyond. A $5 donation is requested for admission. Children attend free and parking is free. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.wmof.com/. The Western Museum of Flight is located at 3315 Airport Drive, Torrance, CA 90505.

The Manhattan Beach Art Center will host a group show of original art works, rare ephemera, and fresh surprises from the original LOCOS artists: Chaz Bojórquez, Dave Tourjé, John Van Hamersveld, Norton Wisdom and Gary Wong. These legends of rebellious art will also be present for the dedication and opening of Manhattan Beach’s new Skate Spot at Marine Avenue Park, where pro skaters will christen the city’s brand new, safe, and legal spot for budding skate enthusiasts from 1 to 3 p.m. The skate spot dedication will be followed by a live concert event at the Manhattan Beach Art Center parking lot, featuring food trucks and live music from Steve Alba’s PowerFlex 5, Charlie Chan & the SOBs, and Los Savages from 3 to 6 p.m. Concluding the festivities will be the formal reception of SOMOS LOCOS at the Manhattan Beach Art Center from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibition also sees the release of both a new Dusters skateboard, with an original LOCOS design by Duster’s Creative Director, Nano Nobrega, and a hardcover book release with essays by art scholars Charlotte Eyerman and Jim Daichendt. The Manhattan Beach Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, March 18 from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. The purpose of the checkpoint is to promote public safety, increase the awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving, and deter impaired driving and unlicensed driving. The intent of the checkpoint is to encourage sober designated drivers. By publicizing these educational and enforcement efforts, the Manhattan Beach Police Department believes that drinking and driving and driving while unlicensed will be reduced. The “Zero Tolerance” approach to enforcement sends a clear message to those who still don’t heed the warning to designate a sober driver before celebrations begin. Simply put, “If you are over the legal limit, you will be arrested.” The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
