South Bay Weekend Guide September 15, 2016

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

The best part about covering the greater South Bay area is that there is always something new to discover. A few things I learned this week: Nothing Bundt Cakes, that fabulous bakery in Manhattan Beach, will be opening a new location in Torrance come February; a new theater group is forming in Hermosa Beach; Paul Martin’s American Grill in El Segundo now offers live music on Thursday evenings; a new brewery just opened in Torrance where you can brew your own beer; and the new Shade Hotel in Redondo will host weekly pool parties on the roof top AquaDeck! There’s so much to see and do…..any ideas on how we go about adding an extra day to the weekend?

The Manhattan Beach Fire Foundation will host a Launch Event tonight, Thursday, September 15 at Shade Hotel from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The community is invited to attend this FREE event, learn more about the organization through a presentation, and hear speakers from the Manhattan Beach Fire Department and the MBFF. The Manhattan Beach Fire Foundation (MBFF) is a newly formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose purpose is to support the Manhattan Beach Fire Department in protecting life, property, and the environment by providing equipment, training, and public outreach programs to supplement city resources. Founded in 2015 and modeled after the very successful City of Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, MBFF is the primary source for private financial support to the Manhattan Beach Fire Department. By working closely with Manhattan Beach Fire Chief Bob Espinosa and the Manhattan Beach Firefighters’ Association, MBFF’s goal is to enhance and sustain the level of excellent service provided by the Manhattan Beach Fire Department. The Manhattan Beach Fire Foundation was initiated and adopted by community members and business leaders to uphold a campaign promise by Manhattan Beach Councilman Mark Burton to provide additional equipment, training, or other items that may not be within the city’s budget. The MBFF is not intended to supplement shortfalls in the budget, but they would very much appreciate any donations to help them provide the absolute best additional support to the Manhattan Beach Firefighters. If you or your company would like to become a sponsor, there are four levels that include: Title Sponsor ($10,000), Gold Sponsor ($5,000), Silver Sponsor ($2,500), or Bronze Sponsor ($1,000). For additional information, visit the website at http://mbfirefoundation.org/. Shade Hotel is located at 1221 North Valley Drive in Manhattan Beach.

The annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, a yearly beach and inland waterway effort to eliminate waste, will take place Saturday, September 17. You’ve been recycling for years, reduced your water consumption, turned in the old gas guzzler for a cleaner fuel ride and maybe even installed solar panels. What more can be done? Funny you should ask. Join thousands of volunteers up and down the coast as they gather to remove trash and debris that eventually ends up in the ocean. California Coastal Cleanup Day was first organized in 1985 by the California Coastal Commission. Last year, over 65,000 volunteers removed almost 770,000 pounds of trash from beaches, rivers and lakes throughout the state. Coastal Cleanup Day is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a chance for Californians to join people around the world in expressing their respect for our oceans and waterways. It’s an opportunity for the community to demonstrate its desire for clean water and healthy marine life. It’s a moment to share with one’s neighbors, family, and friends, coming together to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our environment. Heal the Bay will be organizing the South Bay effort and there are cleanup sites from El Segundo to Rolling Hills. The cleanup takes place between 9 a.m. and noon. To learn more and sign up as a volunteer, visit the website at http://www.healthebay.org. Yes, you can do more.

The program will commence October 25 and run through the end of the school year, meeting once a week at Mira Costa High School. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches students in grades 6 through 12 how to start and run their own, REAL businesses. Students brainstorm business ideas, decide if they want to work by themselves or as a team, write a business plan, pitch their plan to investors for funding, and actually launch their own business or social movement. All of the learning is real and experiential. Students have the opportunity to leave the class as business owners, complete with a DBA and bank account. The Chamber is currently looking for middle or high school students between the ages of 11 and 18 who are interested in starting their own business. Applications are being accepted, and student interviews are conducted, on a rolling basis. YEA! will grant admission to a maximum of twenty four students annually.
