South Bay Weekend Guide September 8, 2016
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

The South Bay by Jackie.com website, this Weekend Guide and The South Bay Show would not be possible without the support of our fabulous sponsors, so I’m delighted whenever the opportunity arises for a NEW SPONSOR SHOUT OUT!!! Any of you that follow me on social media will already be familiar with our new sponsor, Roman Aroma Italian Gran Caffe! The cafe opened late last year in the new development where King Shabu Shabu and Green Street Auto Spa are located at 903 North Catalina Avenue in Redondo Beach near the main branch of the Post Office. My husband and I have been taking our cars to Green Street since they opened and we’re thrilled with the service, so I was happy when the cafe opened – now I could have a beverage and snack while waiting for my car. The cafe is owned and operated by Francesco Martone and offers delicious, authentic, Italian food and drinks, including all those fabulous Italian coffee concoctions: latte, cappuccino, espresso, macchiato and marocchino, in addition to a selection of salads, sandwiches and pastas. There is also a variety of sc
rumptious pastries (cannoli!) and gelato, and an assortment of hard-to-find Italian groceries. The elegant cafe offers seating indoors or you can enjoy your snack at one of the tables outside on the spacious patio. Getting my car washed used to be a chore…but not anymore! After our cars are washed, it’s not unusual for us to spend an hour sipping and noshing with a book or magazine. It’s become our new Sunday morning routine and it’s incredibly relaxing. So, if you haven’t stopped by Roman Aroma yet, please do so – it’s a great addition to the neighborhood! Ci vediamo li! (Translation: See you there!)

Body One Fitness presents the second annual Row for a Reason event to raise funds for Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach (CSCRB) beginning at noon on Friday, September 9 and continuing through Saturday, September 10. Lou Sidella, owner of Body One Fitness, will close his gym for 24 hours and dedicate all row machines to the event. Sidella, who lost his father to cancer several years ago, created Row for a Reason last year with the idea of making a difference while getting a great workout on a row machine. He wanted to create a fundraiser that would appeal to rowers, but also introduce rowing to those who might not otherwise take on that type of workout. “The loss of my father makes the fight against cancer a personal priority,” said Sidella. “Through Row for a Reason, I can help locals get the support they need in winning the battle against this disease.” Participants can sign up for a $50 donation for half hour time slots during the 24 hour period and are encouraged to row at their own pace and invite friends to share the rowing with them. They are also encouraged to have friends and family donate to support their efforts. The first Row for a Reason raised nearly $12,000 for CSCRB, and this year Sidella hopes to beat that figure. As he did last year, Sidella will camp out at Body One Fitness for the night to accommodate any walk-ins that might wish to take part in the wee hours of the morning. “We are so grateful to Lou Sidella for his dedication and passion to our mission and in making this event a success,” said cancer survivor and executive director/CEO of CSCRB, Judith Opdahl. “He understands how vital our free programs are for the well-being of those affected by this terrible disease.” All proceeds will benefit free support programs for cancer patients and their families offered by Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach. For additional information and to register, visit the website at http://www.rowforareason.org or via email at info@rowforareason.org or call 310-379-5425. The Manhattan Beach Chamber is now accepting applications for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy for middle and high school children this fall. The program will commence October 25 and run through the end of the school year, meeting once a week at Mira Costa High School. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches students in grades 6 through 12 how to start and run their own, REAL businesses. Students brainstorm business ideas, decide if they want to work by themselves or as a team, write a business plan, pitch their plan to investors for funding, and actually launch their own business or social movement. All of the learning is real and experiential. Students have the opportunity to leave the class as business owners, complete with a DBA and bank account. The Chamber is currently looking for middle or high school students between the ages of 11 and 18 who are interested in starting their own business. Applications are being accepted, and student interviews are conducted, on a rolling basis. YEA! will grant admission to a maximum of twenty four students annually. Applications for the 2016-17 academic year will be accepted until September 30 or until such time as the class cap is achieved.
