Try the Glazed at S.K. Donuts

S.K. Donuts is a longtime doughnut shop in Redondo Beach.

has been around at least as long as I've lived in the South Bay, so it was only a matter of time before I tried it out. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the "B" rating from the Health Department posted on the door; however, I didn't let that stop me. I was still determined to try yet another doughnut place in the area.

It was good to know there was still a large supply of doughnuts mid-morning, even after the general rush of people in the early hours. The case was bursting with all sorts of colors of frosting on these delicious looking doughnuts. Of course, some bear claws, eclairs and cruellers were in the mix, too. It's a pretty moderately sized shop with a few tables, but note that it is cash only.

The lady working the counter was very cheery. Something you sadly don't see much of these days. I took my time to peruse the case and ended up getting a frosted cake doughnut as well as a glazed and a small doughnut hole. All this and a small coffee were a whopping $3—on par with the rest of the donut places I've tried.

The glazed doughnut was very chewy. It's safe to say that it was pretty fresh: every last bite was airy and sweet. The same thing went for its doughnut-hole counterpart.

Sadly, the same couldn't be said for the cake donut, which was much denser and very firm. The insides were just plain dry, which was a disappointment.

The coffee was also nothing to write home about; it was weak and watery. But at $3 for everything, I can't complain too much. Next time I'll just stick to the glazed donuts, and maybe an eclair or two and a sandwich—just not in the same visit, of course.
