Valedictorian Spotlight: Sharon Huang

valedictorian Sharon Huang will be honored Friday during the high school's graduation. Patch took some time to speak with the honors student before the big day.

Patch: What college are you going to and why did you choose it?

Sharon Huang: I'm going to UCLA, and I chose it because it was between UCLA and Berkley. I got a scholarship for UCLA, and I decided to take that. Also, I live closer, so I wanted to be closer to home.

Patch: What are you looking forward to in college?

Huang: Mostly just the experience of being in college—I've been in school for 12 years, I know how that is—just the [new] experience mostly.

Patch: What activities or sports were you involved in at RUHS?

Huang: I joined several clubs, such as Science Olympiad, Cervantes—which is a Spanish honor society—chemistry tutoring, and as for sports, I played tennis for two years at Redondo.

Patch: Tell me about awards or honors you've received.

Huang: I've been first ... for four years ... [in the] math league contest, I've had four years perfect attendance. For the honors night, I've had math [honors] for the first year. I think that might be it.

Patch: Looking back on your high school years, what was the best thing about Redondo Union? Do you have a favorite memory?

Huang: [The] most memorable moments would be from each class, I really enjoyed chemistry, I really enjoyed physics, meeting a lot of people.

Patch: What will you be glad to leave behind about high school?

Huang: Probably the really structured sort of way high school is—you have to come to class every day, every week there's maybe a quiz, homework everyday—just really structured. Everyone is about the same. College hopefully will be more like, I can find my own path, I can study when I need to, and I know for myself what I need to work on and what I don't need to work on—and just choose my own way.

Patch: What will you miss most about your community?

Huang: Probably how we are really laid back here. Everyone is really friendly and close knit; I'm not sure that would be in college because we have students from all over.

Patch: Any last thoughts before you leave for college?

Huang: I'm really glad I went to this high school. I think it's one of the best—and I've gotten a great education here, I've met so many great people and I love my high school. I'll miss it, I know I will.
