Tribute to Honor Veterans at Park

A Veterans Day tribute to servicemen and women of the United States Armed Forces will be held Friday at the Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial.

Redondo Beach will observe at the new Veterans Memorial in  at 1 p.m. Friday.

The solemn observance—which honors all those members of the military who have served their country—will include reflection, remembrance, music and commentary, according to the Veterans Memorial Task Force.

The event will also acknowledge the of the Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial.

The keynote speaker will be U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Roger R. Laferriere, the captain of the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach, while retired Lt. Col. Tom Lasser will serve as master of ceremonies.

Other participants include local elected officials and military dignitaries, the Redondo High School USMC Junior ROTC and the Los Angeles Police Emerald Pipes and Drums group.

"This annual tribute embodies the patriotic tradition that Redondo Beach is proud to embrace," the city said in a notice on its website. "Come and honor those who serve our nation."

Sponsors of the event include the city of Redondo Beach, and the Redondo Veterans Memorial Task Force.

As usual, donations and contributions will be accepted, and sponsorships are available along with the purchase of Memorial Bricks.

The service, open to the public, will be followed by a barbecue next door sponsored by the Redondo Elks. The barbecue is free for veterans and members of the military, and costs $5 for all others. People interested in attending the barbecue should RSVP to KarenKBuchanan@hotmail.com.
