Watch Your Step at the Pier

The main entryway is all torn up as crews prepare for the installation of the replacement George Freeth statue.

The foot of the Redondo Pier is under construction as crews prepare the area that will be known as George Freeth Plaza. The city has been gussying up the area in preparation for the installation of the replacement statue of the pioneering surfer. The project, a pilot program for pier beautification, has drawn some criticism for its impact on businesses in the immediate area. On Tuesday afternoon, the walkway was all torn up, with bicyclists and pedestrians directed elsewhere.
