Water Quality at Pier Still Not Good Enough

The county's latest water quality tests show a familiar story.

L.A. County’s department of public health issued its latest beach advisory today to avoid the water near the Redondo Pier. Redondo Beach was one of only four L.A. County beaches out of 86 tested that failed to meet the standards of acceptable swimming water, according to the advisory.

The warning said to avoid water contact within a hundred yards south of the pier. A total of four Redondo beach sites were tested over 30 days, but only the area of the pier did not meet the standards.

The county gave three of the four beach sites a C grade and the area near the Herondo storm drain a B.

It’s such a warning has been issued because of high bacteria levels. Mike Shay, principal civil engineer for Redondo Beach, has that the city is making several efforts to improve the quality of water at the pier.

"It's something we continue to work on," he said. "We are putting a lot of infrastructure changes there, we've put trash bins, a fish cleaning station, diverted the runoff under the pier, and we are going to be cleaning the beach under the pier more frequently."
