Advanced Ecology at the Marine Science Institute
MSI's new homeschool program encourages students to work cooperatively and use scientific equipment and interact with live animals.
Registration is open for Advanced Ecology Spring 2017.
The Marine Science Institute is a celebrated environmental education provider that emphasizes experiential learning and puts learners in contact with nature. Advanced Ecology is a newly designed homeschool program tailored to students who have previous experience with marine science. Students will work cooperatively in a team to use scientific equipment and interact with live animals. Each session combines learning on-site at MSI, a field trip, and a Discovery Voyage aboard our research vessel R/V Robert G. Brownlee.
For the Spring 2017 session, students will take an in-depth look at our local Redwood Creek watershed. They will learn about what comprises a watershed, before heading out to study the different facets of one. Students will start by visiting a local creek in Stulsaft Park to test the physical and chemical properties of water in the Arroyo Ojo de Agua tributary. They will then take part in a voyage on board the R/V Robert G. Brownlee where they will study water from the center of the South Bay, and discuss how water quality effects the organisms that live there. Students will obtain a third set of water quality data as they test the water in Redwood Creek at our site in Redwood City. They will finish their watershed education and demonstrate their gained knowledge by building their own models of a watershed to present to their peers.
