Deputies responded around 10:30 p.m. Saturday to the 500 block of Warrington Avenue after receiving multiple reports of a person firing shots into the air in front of a home, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

As the deputies arrived, witnesses reported the man had entered his home, where several family members, including an infant and a 92-year-old woman, also lived, according to authorities.

A woman exited the residence and deputies learned that Gaytan was having a mental health crisis inside and was armed with a gun, authorities said, adding Gaytan was on probation for weapons violations and was prohibited from owning a firearm.

SWAT, drone and crisis negotiation resources were deployed, according to the news release.

Deputies heard multiple shots coming from the home, evacuated neighbors and worked throughout the night to get all the family members out of the residence safely, authorities said.

Gaytan refused to leave, threatened to shoot deputies and was eventually forced out of the home when deputies used non-lethal gas, according to the news release.

He was taken into custody around 6:20 a.m. Sunday and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility, authorities said. The firearm was also recovered, according to the news release.
