Man Accused Of Strangling Brother Surrenders After Hours-Long Standoff In SMC: Police

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A Redwood City man accused of strangling his brother and barricading himself inside a home surrendered after an hours-long standoff Saturday night, police said.

Redwood City officers said they responded around 8:47 p.m. to the 1000 block of Madison Avenue after receiving a report of a disturbance between family members.

Officers said they spoke to a 21-year-old man who told police his brother, 37-year-old Orlando EscobedoAvila of Redwood City, had strangled him until he lost consciousness. Police said the victim had injuries consistent with strangulation.

According to police, EscobedoAvila barricaded himself inside the residence and repeatedly refused orders to surrender.

After several hours of negotiations, EscobedoAvila surrendered and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of felony assault and resisting or delaying officers, police said.

Police also served EscobedoAvila with a previously unserved restraining order and a new emergency protective order obtained on behalf of the victim.

The investigation remains ongoing.
