REDWOOD CITY, CA — Bright altars, marigolds and Catrinas will adorn downtown Redwood City next month as the city's annual Día de los Muertos celebration returns to Courthouse Square.
The free celebration is set for Nov. 8 and will take place at Courthouse Square on Broadway Street between Hamilton Street and Middlefield Road.
This year's celebration will spotlight Tlaxcala, a region of Mexico known for its Indigenous heritage and traditions. Casa Círculo Cultural selects a different Latin American region or theme each year to explore the cultural traditions surrounding Día de los Muertos.
Dozens of family altars, or ofrendas, will be displayed throughout Courthouse Square, giving families an opportunity to honor loved ones who have died and share their stories.
The San Mateo County History Museum will also feature a free exhibition of community-created ofrendas.
Families can participate in children's activities including sugar skull workshops and chalk art.
A food court decorated with papel picado will offer traditional dishes.
Organizers said the Redwood City celebration has grown into an opportunity to recognize the city's diversity and highlight the cultural traditions that shape the Chicanx and Mexican American community.
The event is hosted by Casa Círculo Cultural and the San Mateo County History Museum in collaboration with the Redwood City Parks & Arts Foundation.
