California Hello

Honking the car horn is done freely here in California. My husband and I call it The California Hello.   Back home when someone honked at you, it was because they knew you and wanted to get your attention so that they could wave.  I've thought of trying it here.  Except I don't really know too many people and I'm not sure that it would have the same affect.

I apologize to the lady that honked at me this morning.  I certainly was not trying to get in your way and if you notice next time you are driving this direction, it was you that had the YIELD sign.  I waved at you but then I was a little concerned that you might have thought I was trying to start something.

I'll admit there have been some mornings that I feel myself caving under the pressure to greet someone with The California Hello. But, I try to remind myself that the person in the other car is just like me; a generally good willed person that needs me to extend some grace.

Try an experiment:  Next time you're tempted to lay on the horn and let someone know just how irritating they are, extend some grace.  And, if you must honk, make it a quick tap, smile and wave.  If it's me, I'll smile and wave back!
