As Tessa prepares for her wedding with Jem, the Shadowhunters from the London Institute and other England Institutes are preparing for war against Mortmain and his clockwork army. But he needs Tessa to help him finish his plan with the clockwork automans. But when Mortmain takes all of the yin fen that keeps Jem alive, Will goes on a horse to save Tessa and to get the yin fen so Jem can marry and stay alive for a bit longer.
In the third and final book of the Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare, you can see the character development that has led up to the moment of finding out exactly what kind of downworlder Tessa is. The writing that Clare shows in this novel is much better than her first novel about Shadowhunters, City of Bones, which is being made into a movie on August 21st. While the relationship between Will, Tessa, and Jem takes up most of the book, we are also introduced to Cecily, Gabriel, and Gideon. While we have briefly met these characters in the first two book, Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince, we now are given background information and a storyline for these characters.
While overall a good book, some small but important details are left out. Jessamine’s storyline is almost nonexistent, while Henry and Charlotte Branwell are almost nowhere in the story, when Clare could have written out some interesting tidbits about them. Magnus Bane also seems to be a bit contradictory at times. The epilogue needed work, as it seemed to have been rushed to be finished.
