Gas Leak Confirmed at SMHS, But Classes to Resume
"For the safety of students, staff, crews & the surrounding community, the gas lines for the school will be completely drained," police said

The following is a news release from the San Mateo Police Department:
The San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) will reopen its doors to the students and faculty of San Mateo High School [Thursday] on September 25, 2014.
After a previously reported gas odor on-site, SMUHSD crews and a hired contractor shut off all gas “end points” while PG&E crews tested for the source of the odor. This includes all areas where gas is released, such as stoves, etc.

Following [Wednesday’s] extensive investigation, a leak on the premises has been confirmed.
For the safety of students, staff, crews and the surrounding community, the gas lines for the school will be completely drained before students are allowed back on campus [Thursday]. Existing gas lines will be cut off from the main line so that no gas can enter the school’s system.

There will be no hot water on campus once the gas line is completely turned off. Therefore, the cafeteria will be closed for the time being. Food will be delivered to students from an off-site provider.
“We understand that a gas leak creates a lot of fear and anxiety, and we want to assure not only our families and staff, but the broader community that we are doing everything possible to keep our school community and broader community safe. Safety is our top priority,” explains SMUHSD Superintendent Scott Laurence. “As there will be no gas flowing through our school grounds, the students will be safe and can continue their learning in a safe gas-free environment, and the surrounding community can be assured the issue will be safely addressed.”
Students should report to school at the normal time of 8:00am, and follow their normal Thursday “A-Day” class schedule. Students and their families will receive an update via email and voice message [Wednesday] evening.
The campus will be closed on Friday after a school faculty meeting which typically ends at approximately 3:15pm and the closure will continue over the weekend. Students and families will receive updates on any new developments via email and voice mail. If any student’s family does not receive an update, they should plan to arrive to school on Monday, September 29th, at the usual reporting time.
