Handley Rock: Emerald Hills Hidden Peak

Where in Redwood City could you find a rock? Probably in your front yard, you may say.

How about a 50-foot high rock? Okay, that may be a bit more challenging to find, but possibly still do-able. What about a 50-foot-tall sandstone monolith, complete with caves and a stunning panoramic view of the Bay Area? If you already know where to find this Redwood City attraction, you are more fortunate than the majority of residents who have never heard of nor laid eyes on this astounding natural feature.

If you don't, look no further than the very center of the Emerald Hills District of Redwood City where, tucked away between curving roads and dense trees, the "hidden peak" of Handley Rock looms over the surrounding homes and neighborhood, adding a truly unique characteristic to an already beautiful and natural landscape.

Handley Rock, the main attraction of the 0.5 acre Handley Rock Park, packs a whole lot of fun into a remarkably small area. The front section of the park is complete with a small grassy area and picnic bench, while the area at the base of the rock is fairly easy to navigate.

For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, there are several ways to climb up to the very peak of the rock where you can hang out at the top for a picnic lunch, watch the fireworks on the 4th of July, or simply take in the sweeping views of the entire city.  These are just a few of the marvels that await those ambitious enough to make the climb. While the ascent is not particularly arduous, it can be tricky and is definitely steep. Nonetheless, this should not discourage potential visitors from checking out the park, as there are several caves on the back side of the rock that are perfect for a less-strenuous day trip.
