Man Charged With Possession Of Assault Weapon In San Mateo County

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A man was arrested in San Mateo County on Monday morning on suspicion of possession of a loaded assault weapon.

San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies observed a suspicious vehicle at the intersection of Cabrillo Highway and La Honda Road near San Gregorio State Beach and detained 32-year-old John Schoonover, according to a news release.

Schoonover was found to have a loaded handgun with a threaded barrel, a high capacity magazine and a bulletproof vest, according to the sheriff’s office. He was charged with one felony count of possession of an assault weapon and three misdemeanors — transport of an assault weapon, carrying a loaded firearm and possession of a high capacity magazine.

Schoonover was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility.
