National Night Out to Draw Residents from Their Homes

Redwood City residents, along with residents of other Peninsula cities, will be throwing barbecues and ice cream socials tonight out in front of their homes as an opportunity to get to know each other in the hopes of making the city a safer place.

Between 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight, residents are invited to turn on their porch lights and mingle.

The idea behind the event is that if residents get to know each other better, they will be more likely to work together to help keep their neighborhoods safe.

Local Neighborhood Watch chapters will use this event as a means to organize, recruit and hold meetings.

National Night Out began 28 years ago as a way to unite residents around the cause of preventing crimes. According to leaders of the National Night Out movement, National Night Out 2012 is expected to have a record turnout.

Target, one of the event sponsors, is helping organize a celebration of National Night Out at , featuring arts and crafts stations as well as performances.
