Patch Partners with Woodside High Online Newspaper

Every week, Patch will feature a digest of articles from The Woodside World.

Editor’s Note: At the cutting edge of journalism, Woodside High journalists have created and maintained a robust multimedia news site, The Woodside World. It regularly features content about the goings on at school, but also in the greater Peninsula area.

It is produced by Woodside’s Digital Journalism class, which meets daily and is entirely student-run, with the help of a teacher adviser. The class empowers the students to select their own news to cover, become better writers and investigators, and think outside the box in terms of the limitless possibilities with online journalism.

And now Patch has partnered with The Woodside World to feature every Monday their engaging content, selected by the staff. From their coverage of school events like Homecoming to San Francisco protests of President Obama, make sure to check out their amazing work.

As the end of October draws near, Woodside High School becomes a good deal more orange than usual.

Students and teachers alike throw energy into Homecoming week at the end of the quarter; events and rallies mark an entire week for the school spirit we adore. It isn’t uncommon at this time to see strange things: one student dresses carefully to announce his grade level to the world, and another paints her entire face orange. Even the odd senior in a Roman toga goes without question.

Just a week later, however, Wildcats prowl in costume once again for Halloween. Monsters, pirates and apparitions of all shapes fill the halls, and festive clothing or face paint might easily make a comeback.

Is this, too, school spirit, or will Woodside take any excuse – outside holidays as well as its own homecoming – to dress up and have a bit of fun?

The Long Goodbye: The Last Year at Home

A realization of what really will change when it’s time to leave home for college. Let the nostalgia and hyperventilation begin.

By Cara "CJ" Jack

“Wakey, wakey, sleepyhead. It’s time to get ready for school. You don’t want to be late.” My mom used to coo this to me every morning and I, begrudgingly, would drag my younger self out of bed and zombie walk into the kitchen. My nose propelling me forward to the smell of buttered toast and eggs.

Those were the years, when everything was done and waiting for me. A peck on the cheek, a hug, a wave, a “Have a nice day at school!” called from behind. And my younger self, walking across the street to school, not realizing that these moments that seemed to never end would eventually come to a halting stop.
