Peninsula Man Learns Prison Fate For Violent 2012 Murder

Marc Anthony Furlan has been sentenced for the stabbing and bludgeoning death of 24-year-old Kevin Coffey.

REDWOOD CITY, CA – A 28-year-old man who was convicted of second-degree murder for stabbing and bludgeoning another man to death at a Pacifica home in 2012 was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in prison, San Mateo County prosecutors said Monday.

Marc Anthony Furlan received the sentence from San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Leland Davis, who also added a one-year enhancement for use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony, prosecutors said.

Furlan must also pay $3,764 in restitution to the Government Claims Board, as well as an undetermined amount to the family of the victim, 24-year-old Kevin Coffey, according to the district attorney's office.

Around 5:15 a.m. on Oct. 17, 2012, police responded to a disturbance at a home on Dell Road in Pacifica, where Furlan lived with his father and two other tenants, prosecutors said.

At the home, responding officers found Coffey unconscious on the ground with more than 50 visible wounds on his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to prosecutors.

Police determined that Furlan and Coffey were acquaintances and an altercation had taken place between them, resulting in Coffey's death.

Furlan tried to clean up the crime scene and was in the process of disposing of the body when police arrived, prosecutors said.

The homicide was the first to occur in Pacifica in more than a decade, with the previous one happening in 2000.

Furlan was found guilty in June following a 19-day jury trial. His defense attorney John Elworth declined Monday to comment on the sentencing.
