Redwood City Police Officer Dies on Duty

Lifesaving efforts failed to save the 18-year veteran.

REDWOOD CITY, CA - Redwood City Police Officer Gerardo Silva died of natural causes while on duty Friday. He was 57.

Silva was an 18-year veteran of the department. According to a social media post by Redwood City Police, he went to the station for a call for service. "When Officer Silva failed to come back in service after handling his call, police personnel began a search of the building when he did not respond to his radio. Shortly after the search began, Officer Silva was discovered within the police facility unconscious and not breathing."

Life saving efforts were begun, first by fellow officers and then by Redwood City Fire Department and EMS personnel.

He was taken to Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City where additional emergency efforts were unsuccessful.

Information about his survivors and funeral plans were not immediately available.
