Redwood City’s ‘Chalk Granny’ Lifts Spirits Amid Dark Times

REDWOOD CITY, CA — What began as a way to beat back boredom amid the early days of quarantine has turned a Redwood City grandmother into a neighborhood cult hero, NBC Bay Area reports.

Mary Kay Mitchell’s journey to becoming “The Chalk Granny” started with her sketching out colorful drawings in her driveway in March of last year shortly after shelter-in-place orders went into effect, the report said.

She quickly got hooked.

The 68-year-old now creates three to four drawings a week, bringing cheer to her neighbors amid dark times.

Mitchell also takes request for custom projects for a small fee according to the report, donating the proceeds to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

"I got my grandson's chalk and I came out front and I started drawing a hopscotch," Mitchell told the television station.

"And then I drew a heart that said, 'When this is all over, what will you remember?'" Then I thought about it, 'What will I remember?' And so then every single week, I would draw something new."
