2 Police Officers Injured By Suspect, Police Report

The man "aggressively assaulted both officers" on Tuesday and was Tased when backup officers arrived, according to a spokeswoman.

OAKLAND, CA — Two Oakland police officers were injured Tuesday morning by a domestic violence suspect whom other officers stunned with a Taser a few minutes later, police said.

The two officers responded at about 9:50 a.m. to a home in the 1100 block of 89th Avenue, after a woman who lives there called police to say her ex-boyfriend had a gun in his hand and was pounding on the front door. The two have a young child together, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.

The two officers confronted the suspect, an adult male. When they ordered him to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed, the man instead "aggressively assaulted both officers," Watson said.

More officers arrived on scene a few minutes later and used a Taser to subdue the suspect, who was still combative and aggressive, Watson said. The suspect, whose name wasn't released, was also taken to the
hospital, standard practice when a Taser is used, and subsequently released.

According to Watson, one of the officers suffered "substantial injuries," but Watson didn't detail what they were. Both officers were taken to a hospital for treatment and later released.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of battery on police officers causing injury and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place, both felonies, and taken to jail.
