7-Time Felon Arrested for Oakland Murder

Police say his accomplice in the murder accidentally shot himself and later died.

Oakland, CA - A seven-time felon has been charged with murder for the shooting death of a man in East Oakland last weekend, prosecutors said today.

Terry Goodwin, 54, is charged with killing 53-year-old Ronald Rhodes of Oakland in the 1400 block of Sunshine Court at about 9 p.m. Saturday. Rhodes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Goodwin's accomplice, 24-year-old Marques Lomack, accidentally shot himself during the incident and was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.

No charges were filed in connection with his death.

Witnesses told police that Lomack and Goodwin fled in a car after Goodwin shot and killed Rhodes, Oakland police Officer Ruben Loya-Cabrera wrote in a probable cause statement.

Police stopped their car in the 3400 block of 82nd Avenue a short time later, Loya-Cabrera said.

Police then conducted a lineup and witnesses identified Goodwin, who lives in the same block where the shooting occurred, as the man who shot Rhodes, according to Loya-Cabrera.

Investigators took Goodwin to the homicide unit office at police headquarters to be interviewed but he invoked his right to an attorney and refused to talk, Loya-Cabrera said.

Goodwin, who also is charged with possession of marijuana for sale, was arraigned on Wednesday and is scheduled to return to Alameda County Superior Court today to possibly enter a plea.

Prosecutors say Goodwin, whose criminal record as an adult dates back to 1987, has two prior convictions for possession of marijuana for sale.

They say he also has one conviction each for possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of a controlled substance with a prior conviction, sale or transportation of marijuana, possession of cocaine
base for sale and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Goodwin is also known as Jerry Goodwin and Kenny Drew, according to prosecutors.
