Dog Killed, 12 Displaced In Oakland Fire

Firefighters were called at 10:48 a.m. to blaze at a three-story apartment building.

OAKLAND, CA -- A dog died and 12 people were displaced after a fire this morning at an East Oakland apartment building, fire officials said. Firefighters were called at 10:48 a.m. to blaze at a three-story apartment building in the 5400 block of Bancroft Avenue, said Battalion Chief Chris Landry.

Crews found fire and heavy smoke in a first-floor unit, and managed to contain the blaze there. However, five other units in the building sustained smoke damage, Landry said.

A dog died, but there were no injuries to residents of the building or firefighters, Landry said.

The fire was under control by 11:02 a.m. The Red Cross was assisting the displaced residents.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
