Mads Tolling Performs Sunday at Jazz at the Chimes

Meet Danish-born jazz violinist Mads Tolling and his ensemble at a reception following the concert.

From a Jazz at the Chimes press release:

Jazz at the Chimes will present two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Mads Tolling on Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland.

Danish-born Tolling, now a Bay Area resident, brings the Mads Tolling Quartet to the stage of the Julia Morgan-designed Chapel of the Chimes. Concertgoers will be astounded by the range of moods Tolling evokes from his violin, an instrument not often heard in jazz combos.

The group includes Dave McNab on guitar, George Ban-Weiss on bass and Eric Garland on drums. All four instruments play unconventional roles to make music come to life. Violin may act as drum, guitar may take bass lines and bass may carry the melody.

At this concert they will perform a variety of tunes, including some from Tolling’s CD Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty — Live at Yoshi's.
