Minimum Wage Increases Slightly In Oakland

With the ushering in of 2016 next week, Oakland workers who are paid at the minimum wage rate will be seeing a slight pay bump, city officials said.

Based on the local Consumer Price Index, the minimum wage rate in Oakland will increase from $12.25 to $12.55 starting on Jan. 1, city officials said earlier this month.

This annual increase is a feature of Measure FF, which appeared on the November 2014 ballot and was approved by nearly 82 percent of Oakland voters, according to city officials.

As a result of that measure’s passing, minimum wage in Oakland rose from $9 per hour to $12.25 on March 2. This had an effect on an estimated 48,000 workers.

San Francisco joined in raising minimum wage to $12.25 beginning in May. Oakland city officials advised employers that any worker who performs at least 2 hours of work in a particular week in the city - including temporary and seasonal employees - must be paid at least the minimum wage.

Employers were supposed to advise their employees of the impending minimum wage increase by Dec. 15.
