New Exhibit On Work Opens At Oakland Library

The exhibit will be open into March of next year.

OAKLAND, CA — A multimedia art exhibit and initiative focused on work has opened at the Oakland Public Library, library officials announced Friday.

The exhibit and initiative titled "Working in America" has opened at the library's main branch at 125 14th Street near Lake Merritt.

"Working in America" was inspired by the 1974 book by Studs Terkel titled "Working" and tells the story through words and photographs of 24 workers from across the U.S.

One of the workers is from Oakland and several are from the Oakland area, according to library officials.

The exhibit includes photographs from Pulitzer-prize winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario. It was conceived and created by Jane Saks, president and artistic director for the nonprofit Project&.

The group of workers profiled includes an Olympic gold-medalist, an electrician and a Silicon Valley entrepreneur.

Library officials said the exhibit will be at the library through mid March 2018.
