Nice Gift! 2 Zebras Join Oakland Zoo

Meet Beaker and Beetlejuice, new residents from the North Bay.

OAKLAND, CA — The lonely zebras of the Oakland Zoo now have two new companions, courtesy of Safari West in Sonoma County.

Two male zebras, "Beaker" and "Beetlejuice," ages 1 and 2 respectively, have joined two mature females, "Stormy" and "Jumoke," at the Oakland Zoo, zoo spokeswoman Erin Harrison said Wednesday.

"Now they are back to a herd again and not just two ladies," Harrison said.

In the wild, a natural herd consists of four or more zebras, she said. So when the zoo lost a couple of zebras to old age recently, it was time to bring in two more.

The new additions arrived about eight weeks ago, around Sept. 1, before the North Bay wildfires broke out last month. The newcomers' addition had nothing to do with the fires, Harrison said.

"We're introducing them to each other gradually," Harrison said.

The two females are in their 20s, she said.

Safari West donated the zebras to the Oakland Zoo. "It was a gift. They have a whole lot of zebras," Harrison said.
