Oakland Man Identified As Crash Victim

OAKLAND, CA — A pedestrian fatally struck Saturday morning by an SUV on northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as Bartolo Garcia Vasquez.

Garcia Vasquez, a 36-year-old resident of Oakland, was walking on the highway near 98th Avenue when he was struck by a Hyundai SUV.

Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene at 5:04 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver remained at the scene to cooperate with the subsequent investigation, and impairment was not suspected as a factor, according to the CHP.

CHP officials did not say why Garcia Vasquez was walking on the highway.
