Oakland PD Issues Home Break-In Warnings, Safety Advice

Oakland police issued a warning last week about possible local home break-in scammers.

Rockridge residents living on Shafter Avenue have complained about an uptick in home break-ins and casings.

At Thursday’s Greater Rockridge Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council meeting, several residents showed up voice their concerns about becoming targets of break-ins.

Oakland police Officer Donald Lane, who was present at the meeting, patrols the Rockridge neighborhood. He gave several tips to residents worried about break-ins and casings:

  • If something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t. If you notice any suspicious behavior on your street (an out-of-place car or person) phone it in to police.
  • When phoning in descriptions of suspicious people or vehicles, be descriptive. Notice what the person is wearing – especially shoes since they are changed less often than other clothing. Record license plate numbers of suspicious vehicles.
  • Take cell phone pictures or video of suspects when possible.

The Oakland Police Department issued a statement last week, warning residents of people posing as city workers in an attempt case homes.

-Call the Oakland Police non-emergency number (510) 777-3333 to report suspicious activities.

-Avoid walking alone.

-Conceal valuables when in public.

-Don't be distracted while on the phone or listening to music.

-Cross the street to get away from a suspicious person.

-Don't leave anything of value in view in your car or home windows.

-Look around for strangers before entering or exiting your home.

-Never open your door to solicitors or strangers.
