Elderly Woman Rescued From House Fire Near The Claremont

Firefighters pulled the victim from a two story house.

BERKELEY, CA —An elderly woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries she suffered at a fire at her home near the Berkeley-Oakland border this morning, according to fire officials.

The fire at the woman's two-story home at 44 Alvarado Road, a short distance above the Claremont Club & Spa, was reported at 6:05 a.m. and was contained in less than a half-hour, Berkeley Assistant Fire Chief Keith
May said.

Firefighters discovered the woman in a room on the first floor in a section of the house that was away from the flames, which also were on the first floor, according to May. He said he doesn't know her condition.

No one else was in the house during the fire, May said.

Two rooms on the first floor were damaged by the blaze and there was smoke damage throughout the house, according to May.

The cause of the fire hasn't yet been determined, he said.

Oakland firefighters also responded to the fire because one of the calls that reported the blaze said the fire was at 66 Alvarado Road, which is on the Oakland side of the border, according to May.

But the Berkeley Fire Department became the lead agency battling the blaze after it was determined that the fire was actually in Berkeley, May said.
