Police Alert: Door-to-Door Scam

From the Oakland Police Department:

The Oakland Police Department has received a question from a concerned community member regarding individuals knocking on her door last evening:

"Hello, I just wanted to report that an individual just knocked on my door and greeted me. He was wearing a full, official-ish looking orange vest
with a tag that was labeled "Oakland Public Safety". Is the city of
Oakland really sending people out door to door to ask about how
"updated" our alarm systems are? He asked if my alarm was monitored, and whether it was tied to cell phone or landline."

The Oakland Police Department and Oakland's Neighborhood Services Division is unaware of any City sponsored program or purpose for this encounter. At this time, we are unaware of this resident's address or neighborhood; it is unknown whether this activity occurred in an isolated area or if it is Citywide. Until we are able to determine otherwise, we believe these individuals are gathering information for criminal use. You should not answer any questions regarding home alarm monitoring, and should report the activity and circumstances as soon as possible.
