Son Of Oakland City Councilwoman Killed In LA
The USC student was the victim of a botched robbery attempt, according to police.
OAKLAND, CA — The 21-year-old son of Oakland City Councilwoman Lynette Gibson-McElhaney died Sunday morning, about 10 hours after an apparent botched robbery near the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles, police and a university publication said Sunday.
In an emailed letter Sunday, USC interim President Dr. Wanda Austin told the university community about the death of Victor McElhaney in an apparent robbery attempt at an intersection in the Newton area of Los Angeles, less than a mile east of the main USC campus.
Victor McElhaney apparently was approached by several men at the Newton area intersection, an LAPD police dispatcher said Sunday. He was shot and taken to a nearby hospital, where he died at about 11 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Victor McElhaney transferred in 2017 from California State University East Bay in Hayward to USC's Thornton School of Music to pursue jazz studies, according to USC Annenberg Media.
Neither a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman nor staff members of Gibson-McElhaney, who represents Oakland's District 3 on the City Council, could immediately be reached for comment Sunday.
