Southwest Jet From Oakland Skids Off SoCal Runway

BURBANK, CA —A Southwest Airlines flight that departed from Oakland this morning slid off the runway as it landed at Hollywood Burbank Airport, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

Southwest Flight 278 took off from Oakland International Airport around 8 a.m., but upon landing at about 9:05 a.m. at the Burbank airport, the plane rolled off the end of Runway 8, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The plane came to a stop in the Engineered Material Arresting System, a safety system designed to help stop a plane if it rolls off the runway, Gregor said.

Southwest officials wrote on Twitter that there were 112 passengers and five crew members on the plane, and they all safely got off the aircraft.

No injuries were reported but some flights have been canceled or delayed into Burbank as a result of the incident, according to the airport.

FAA safety inspectors are at the scene this afternoon to investigate, Gregor said.
