State Bails Out Oakland Schools
The $30 million will cover half of the district's shortfall. But school closures may still be needed.

OAKLAND, CA — The Oakland Unified School District will receive financial help for its budget challenges but district officials said Monday that they might still have to consolidate some schools.
Starting next school year, the district forecasts a budget shortfall of $30.3 million.
The help coming to the district following Gov. Jerry Brown's signature on Assembly Bill 1840 will cover up to 75 percent of that shortfall as long as the district meets certain conditions.

District officials planned on having to cut $60 million from the 2020-21 budget, but as long as conditions are met, money from AB 1840 will cover up to 50 percent of that shortfall, according to the officials.
The district's progress toward fiscal solvency will be evaluated each year. The money does not have to be repaid.
