Hogg had walked with a friend to a corner store in the area of Penniman Avenue. When they left the store, they walked past a parked vehicle occupied by Barrera Rodriguez and two other men, according to a probable
cause statement by Oakland police Officer Kris McClain.
Hogg then approached the passenger side of the vehicle, shot Barrera Rodriguez and fled on foot, McClain wrote. Barrera Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

McClain wrote that the shooting was partially captured on video surveillance from the corner store and witnesses told police that they saw Hogg shoot Barrera Rodriguez and heard him say he was trying to get some money.
