Waste Management Charity Golf Tournament Raises $500,000 to Benefit Local Charities

OAKLAND, Calif. – The 2013 Waste Management Charity Golf Tournament was held on Sept. 4-5 in Hayward, Calif. More than 200 people, representing a variety of corporations throughout North America, played golf at TPC Stonebrae and attended an evening event held at The Claremont that raised more than $500,000 for local charities. The money raised will benefit six local charities:  Alameda County Community Food Bank, Chabot Space and Science Center, Cypress Mandela Training Center, Friends of Oakland Parks & Rec, The YMCA of the East Bay and the East Bay Community Foundation.

“The fundraiser was an outstanding success,” said David Tucker, director of Community Relations, Waste Management of Alameda County. “Being chosen as this year’s location for the charity tournament was a wonderful opportunity to host our vendor partners, corporate senior leadership and elected officials, while giving back to local organizations that do incredible work in Alameda County and beyond.”

The six recipient organizations will benefit from Waste Management’s donations in the following ways:

• Alameda County Community Food Bank ($95,000)
  Funds will go toward the purchase of a 26-foot straight truck to increase/improve food distribution around Alameda County.

• Chabot Space and Science Center ($95,000)
  Waste Management’s contribution will fund the implementation of an environmental education exhibit and programming.

• Cypress Mandela Training Center ($65,000)
  Funds will continue to support and expand training programs with an emphasis on green pre-apprenticeships, reclamation and reuse of green construction materials and the safe handling of hazardous material.

• East Bay Community Foundation ($90,000)
  Waste Management’s contribution will go toward creating a donor advisor fund to provide mini-grants to organizations focused on environmental issues in Alameda County.

• Friends of Oakland Parks & Rec ($75,000)
  Waste Management’s contribution will be used to match other funding allocations to upgrade toddler lots, to install accessible shaded picnic areas and to resurface tennis court at the East Oakland Sports Center.

• The YMCA of the East Bay ($80,000)
  Funds will underwrite a Bullying Prevention program and We Dig the Y, an urban garden/healthy eating initiative).

This is the first time the Waste Management Charity Golf Tournament was held in California.
