What's Happening with the Shell Service Station on College Avenue?

The gas station is shut down, its future uncertain.

Questions for Rockridge Patch readers:

Does anyone know what's going on with the former Shell service station at 6039 College Ave.? That's the station at College and Claremont avenues, kittycorner from the "Safeway corner."

The station closed down a couple of months ago and is now surrounded by a chainlink fence. The property is owned by the Montrose Investment Co. in Larkspur, Marin Co., whose phone has been disconnected. Neighbors say a notice of a request for a demolition permit was posted nearby a few weeks ago, but it's not there now.

So far, that's all Rockridge Patch has been able to find out.

Assuming that the station isn't rebuilt, and hazardous waste disposal problems could be solved, what would you like to see at that corner?
