SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A bullet tore through a vehicle’s rear window and blasted out the front windshield, narrowly missing the driver and prompting a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office investigation that ended with two arrests, a SWAT stop, and the recovery of a gun.
Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies responded at about 9:34 p.m. June 12 to a reported shooting near Moorland Avenue and Todd Road in Santa Rosa.
The victims told deputies another vehicle followed them before a passenger in that vehicle fired a handgun at them, according to the Sheriff's office.
The bullet struck the victims’ vehicle, entered through the rear window, and exited through the front windshield, narrowly missing the driver. One victim suffered minor injuries from broken glass, the Sheriff's office said.
Deputies identified a possible suspect and vehicle during the initial investigation, and detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit took over the case. Investigators identified the suspects as Krystal Gonzalez, 20, and Sean Shanley, 35, both of Santa Rosa.
On June 13, detectives and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s SWAT team conducted a high-risk vehicle stop and used a rescue vehicle to safely pin the suspects’ car. Gonzalez and Shanley initially failed to comply with commands before surrendering without incident, authorities said.
Detectives later served a search warrant at a home in the 2100 block of Stony Point Road and recovered a firearm believed connected to the shooting.
Gonzalez was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted murder, conspiracy, and shooting into an occupied vehicle, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
Shanley was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, conspiracy, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Both remained held without bail, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators believe the shooting was isolated and said they do not consider it an ongoing threat to public safety, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
