Pickleball isn't exactly a niche hobby anymore. The easy-to-learn paddle sport has found fans of just about every age and skill level, and Rohnert Park is no exception.

Rohnert Park's main public pickleball destination is Sunrise Park, where a local nonprofit organizes daily open play and beginner clinics. There's also a larger court setup at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sonoma Wine Country. Before heading out, check current schedules and access information with the park, club or facility.

For public outdoor play, Sunrise Park is home base for the Rohnert Park Pickleball Club, a community nonprofit that works to promote pickleball in the city. The club describes Sunrise Park as having the largest number of public outdoor pickleball courts in Sonoma County.
The club's current play schedule lists open play for everyone from 8 a.m. to noon seven days a week. Games are played to 11, and when others are waiting, players rotate off after a game and use a whiteboard system to line up the next foursome.
If you've never played before, Sunrise Park is also particularly beginner-friendly. The club currently offers free beginner clinics on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on the temporary courts.
The City of Rohnert Park's recreation facility system lists pickleball and tennis courts among Sunrise Park's amenities, along with a playground, public restrooms and an all-weather field for soccer and softball.
One Doubletree Drive, Rohnert Park
For another option right in Rohnert Park, the DoubleTree by Hilton Sonoma Wine Country offers pickleball on site. Hilton's current hotel information lists eight pickleball courts at the property.
The hotel also has an outdoor pool, fitness center and two neighboring golf courses. Court access isn't the same as showing up at a public park, however, so check directly with the hotel for current pickleball access, reservations and any applicable fees before planning a game.
If you're new to pickleball, you'll probably run into the phrase "open play." Rather than reserving a court with the same group of friends for an hour, open play generally means players rotate in and out of games with other people who show up during a designated period.
The exact setup varies from place to place, so don't assume every open-play session works the same way. Some are divided by skill level or use particular courts, while others are more casual. If you're unsure whether a session is beginner-friendly, check with the organizer or recreation department before you go.
One reason the sport has attracted such a broad following is that it can be adapted to different ages and ability levels. The smaller court means players cover less ground than they would in tennis, and newcomers can start with a fairly basic serve-and-return game before worrying about more advanced shots and strategy.
Still, pickleball is a sport. Warm up, wear shoes that provide good support for side-to-side movement and play at a pace that makes sense for you.
You don't need to know every rule, own an expensive paddle or have a perfectly executed "dink" shot before showing up at a court.
