Cougar Honors Basketball Standouts with Awards Night

Capital Christian celebrates a record season.

Capital Christian Boys Basketball held their awards night on Sunday night and more than 100 were in attendance to celebrate their stellar season. The junior varsity team lead by Head Coach Devon Jones and assisted by CCHS alumnus Joe Mitchell finished with a 24-4 season. The varsity team coached by Terry Battenberg and assisted by former head coach Phil Oates and Tim Weir finished with a 27-6 record making the program overall 51-10, an outstanding program record. The event was beautifully catered by Perkos on Micron Avenue - great supporters of the basketball program and the food was fantastic!

Junior varsity awards went to Blair Lewis - Cougar Award; Matt Frederici for Most Improved and Michael Wadsworth who was awarded the JV MVP.

Varsity awards went to Tanner Nissen  - Mr Cougar Award; Justice Shelton-Mosely for Most Improved and Matt Donlan who was awarded the Varsity MVP.

Golden Empire League Awards were also announced. The Varsity team had seven players who qualified for Academic All League. To qualify you must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the season. These were Nifae Lealao, Tanner Nissen, Justice Shelton-Mosely, D.J. Wilson, Matt Donlan, Anthony Garza and Luc Clopton.

Those named to the First Team All League Team were Trey Belton, Tyler Jennings, D.J. Wilson and Matt Donlan. Donlan was also named the Golden Empire League MVP.

Matt Donlan will also take part in the Sacramento Optimist Society Metro All Star Game to be held Saturday, March 31 at Center High School at 6 p.m.

Guests at the banquet were treated to a professional video of the Section Title Game from Arco Arena made by Coach Oates' son Matt, who is an LA filmmaker. It was a fitting end to what has been a record setting season for the Cougars.
