Rosemont Students React to Online SOPA Protest

Rosemont High School students discuss the effects SOPA and PIPA could have on the web and their researching efforts.

The . Google, YouTube, and Wikipedia, some of the major sources of information are having a temporary blackout for 24 hours.

Considering that these websites provide various avenues for information access, it will limit resources for many people, most especially the students. Almost everyone depends on online searching because the websites provide convenience and accessibility.

Without these free online websites, SOPA can hinder information to students. It will prevent them from accessing the latest news, current issues, and pertinent or significant facts. Students would have to resort to primitive ways of researching –reading from tons of books and spending hours in the library. Unfortunately, most high school students don’t have much time in their hands to go to the library because of extra-curricular activities before, during, and after school. If they have no alternatives, then they will not be able to their reports or projects well.

If this bill is passed, it looks like there are more counter-productive effects than benefits.

“I think it’s really ridiculous that we have to pay for these websites that has been free for a very long time. If they do shut down, I think that Internet users will support these websites since it’s our number one go to on the Internet,” said Vanna Le.
