Notable Books: Mansfield Park @ Central (Book Club)
Central Library
828 I St., Sacramento
Last year the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice garnered much press attention and even prompted the Bank of England to announce plans to issue a 10-pound note honoring Austen. But this year the anniversary of Austen’s next-published novel Mansfield Park has gone by unnoticed. In this follow-up program David Bell and Rachel Dodge intend to rectify this miscarriage of justice and give Mansfield Park its due. David and Rachel will be joined by two well-known Sacramento actors: Ryan Snyder who played Mr. Darcy in last year’s stage adaptation of Pride and Prejudice at the Sacramento Theatre Company and Jamie Kale who played Annie in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing at Capital Stage. Jamie and Ryan will perform scenes from “Lovers’ Vows “ a play crucial to the plot of Mansfield Park. Why has Mansfield Park always been the least popular of Austen’s novels? David and Rachel will address this question arguing with impeccable logic and disarming humor that the novel does not deserve this neglect--that in fact it is a better novel than its predecessor. Don’t miss the chance to read and discuss this underappreciated masterpiece and to compare it with the ever popular and much loved Pride and Prejudice. David Bell spent almost forty years teaching Jane Austen’s novels at Sacramento State before retiring in 2010. Rachel Dodge is an adjunct professor of English at Sierra College. Both have been featured speakers at the library’s How Austentatious and Notable Books programs. They have collaborated on several Austen projects.
