Lots of SMUD Rebate Dollars Remain for Rosemont

Hefty energy-efficiency rebates across the Sacramento area have expired–except for Rosemont residents.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) customers in Rosemont are still eligible for rebates of up to $9,000 for making their homes more efficient, according to SMUD's website.

"The whole idea is we make the house tighter and work [more] efficiently," said Kevin Tippit, Energy Programs Manager of Brower Mechanical, SMUD's chosen contractor for the Home Performance Program in Rosemont.

The company will perform home energy usage audits–which usually cost $99–for free in Rosemont, Tippit said. Then, a list of recommendations is created, with varying levels of energy savings and corresponding rebates available from SMUD.

"We do see a lot of low insulation levels [and] duct leakage [in Rosemont]," Tippit said.

He said SMUD has enough rebate funding to perform renovations in 69 Rosemont homes, and so far the company has only done nine or 10.

"The snowball is starting," he said. "We think we might run out of money by the end of the year."

If enough residents agree to upgrade their homes, SMUD will pay out a $50,000 “community reward” to a nonprofit or group of Rosemont’s choosing.

Businesses are also eligible for rebates.
