Rancho Cordova Man Allegedly Robs Bank by Debit Card

Man demands bank deposit money into his account, authorities say.

A 20-year-old man allegedly robbed a Rancho Cordova bank last week with a 21st-century twist: Instead of demanding the clerk hand over a bag of cash, Nirjay Naresh Maharaj allegedly told a Folsom Boulevard Bank of America employee to deposit money into his account.

He threatened the employee, then swiped his debit card and punched in his PIN number, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department crime log.

Maharaj did not use a weapon during the Thursday afternoon robbery, sheriff's department spokesman Dep. Jason Ramos said.

After the alleged electronic robbery was complete, Maharaj fled the bank on foot and the employee canceled the transaction.

Maharaj returned to the bank the next day, and was arrested.
