Rosemont Track and Field Takes First in Metro League Finals

Both the men and women Wolverines won handily in this Metro League meet.

The men and women's track and field teams both took first place in the 2011 Metro League Championships at Rosemont High School on Friday.

The Rosemont girls secured first place with 129 points, followed by Valley High School with 87 and McClatchy High School with 80. The boys placed first with 160 points, followed by Kennedy High School with 89 and McClatchy with 72.

The individual winners and top three runners-up qualified to advance to the section meet at Bella Vista High School next week.

Junior won the varsity girls shot put, discus throw and the triple jump in her mighty effort to lead the Wolverines to first place.

Despite her convincing win, coach Scott Maddox said it was far from what she's capable of.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Nia Dorner was equally impressive on the track, winning the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes for the Wolverines.

Maddox said he's impressed with her athletic ability, but his praise goes beyond the track.Β

β€œThe best thing about [Nia Dorner]–she's a great student,” Maddox said.

Sophomore Destiny Porter continued the Rosemont girls' dominance on the track by winning the 800-meter run by a margin of 3.49 seconds.

Hunter Chavez, the only girl pole vaulter from any team to clear a height, earned Rosemont 10 points.

On the boys' side, the pole vaulters led the charge as Zack Smart, Cameron Kimble and Sieren Smith swept the event for the Wolverines.

Smart, a senior, and Kimble, a junior, both cleared 8 feet 6 inches, but Smart was awarded first place due to Kimble needing multiple attempts to clear the height.

Smart also won the varsity boys discus.

In the varsity boys shot put, Rosemont senior Andrew Hunter's distance of 44 feet 2 and 3/4 inches, was enough to beat his competition and give the Wolverines another 10 points towards victory.

Maddox had nothing but praise and admiration for his athletes following the meet.

β€œThey're quality athletes, quality individuals,” said Maddox. β€œThey work hard in practice and it shows on the track."
