- Roseville’s All American Speedway has set some tentative dates for events in the 2022 racing season. The sound of roaring engines will return to the track beginning March 5th with the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour. The ARCA Menards Series West is scheduled for October 1st and the fan favorite Malicious Monster Truck Tour will be back on October 22nd. The rest of the season’s events are being planned by Speedway officials, so be sure to check back for more dates. (Gold Country Media)
- In light of the recent rise in omicron variant COVID infections in the region, the New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular fireworks show at the Old Sacramento Waterfront and the city-sponsored New Year’s Eve fireworks show in San Francisco have been cancelled this year. According to the California Department of Public Health, three of the state’s health systems have reported that 50%-70% of their cases of coronavirus are consistent with the fast spreading omicron variant. - The highways into the Sierra are open, but Caltrans and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office are urging travelers to stay away if your trip is not absolutely essential. Chain requirements, heavy traffic, hazardous conditions and multiple collisions are hindering emergency responders from helping people in need. If you must travel over the mountains, check current road conditions (Caltrans District 3 Twitter is great for up-to-the-minute updates) and be prepared for a long, slow journey. (ABC 10)
- Placer Recycles, the recycling program from our regional Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA), is ready to roll out its new organic waste program. In keeping with state legislation (SB 1383) going into effect on January 1st, the new protocol will compost food scraps, landscape clippings and soiled paper in an “anaerobic” (without oxygen) environment. This process will cut down on the methane gas that occurs as a byproduct of organic waste left in landfills. Read more about this process and how WPWMA makes the most of our garbage. - For all you snow fanatics itching to get on the slopes, here’s an update of the conditions at all your favorite ski resorts. In case you didn’t know, there’s a whole lot of snow going on in the Sierra! And there’s even more dropping as I write this. Now you can make your plans and dream of all that sweet, sweet powder tonight. (Roseville Today)
