Here are the top five stories today in Roseville:
- I'm so happy to write about another Roseville hero! This time, it's cab driver Joel Carstens who drives for Yellow Cab of Roseville. He was dispatched to pick up 82-year-old veteran, Bill Miller, at his home. When Carstens got there, he realized Miller was on his way to deposit thousands of dollars at a bank he'd never been to and in an account that he didn't set up, all in a bid to get big money and prizes from Publisher's Clearinghouse. Of course, this didn't sound right to Carstens so he talked to Miller a bit more and figured out the veteran was about to fall prey to a scam. In the end, Carstens drove Miller to Miller's own bank and even walked him inside to talk with the teller. A huge thank you to Joel Carstens for saving this vet from a costly mistake. - The Placer County Resource Conservation District was awarded a grant from CalFire to fund a mentorship program for students interested in careers in forestry. The grant was in the amount of $250,880. "Program growth, from 18 mentor pairs in 2020 to 47 pairs in 2021, illuminated the need for dedicated staff to meet the program's goals and sustain its growth." Participating schools include UC Berkeley, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Humboldt, College of the Redwoods and Shasta College. Placer RCD hopes to expand the program to other academic institutions. (Roseville Press Tribune)
- It was a nail-biter at the District 54 Little League 10-11 All-Star championship game! Maidu led most of the game. At the top of the sixth it was 7-4 Maidu. But El Dorado Hills rallied! By the bottom of the sixth, El Dorado Hills was within one run of tying the game and the runner was on third. But it was not to be, as a strikeout ended the inning leaving the runner stranded. Maidu hung on to win the game 7-6. Whew! (Gold Country Media)
- Thunder Valley Casino Resort is looking to fill over 100 full and part-time positions at its job fairs throughout the month of July. The next one is today for housekeeping and internal maintenance workers. On July 20 you can apply for food and beverage jobs and on July 22 it is looking for security folks. (Roseville Today)
- I have a soft spot for enterprising young people. This guy fits that bill to a T! Davin Metcalf is a Life Scout in Troop 1051 in Roseville. He is starting his Eagle Scout project and he needs your help! On his Facebook page he writes "One way I will be earning money is by collecting recyclable beverage containers. I will be picking up these items in the local area for the next few weeks. If you have beverage containers marked with “CRV,” send a private message with your address, and my mom and I will arrange a time to pick up." Will you help Davin out? (Facebook)
